Are you a survivor of religious trauma or spiritual abuse?

Are you feeling lost in knowing how to recover from your experience? Feeling overwhelmed in recovery is the most common experience amongst survivors. You are walking away from a world where you were completely submerged in the rules, rigidity and demands of that group, so it totally makes sense to be feeling this way. Now you're out in a different world trying to stay safe, heal your nervous system, and find a healthy way forward.

You are not alone. We offer two ways to get religious and cult trauma support.

"This was beyond helpful. For well over 40 years I have been in search of why I block things out, if my life depended on it I could not remember. I have seriously worried that there is something wrong with my brain and that I have dementia. I blamed it on ADHD. Listening to this has released feelings I did not know I had. I now recognize I have suppressed feelings in order to survive and keep things in order. I can't thank you enough for sharing this. I am not stupid, I am a survivor. God bless you."

I can't thank you enough for sharing this.

I'm a clinical psychologist that specializes in treating religious trauma and cult abuse. Recovery is possible and we are making it more accessible.
I remember sitting in a theology class over a decade ago and realizing that my experience inside of my religion had been traumatizing and I was in need of some real support. I looked for therapists that specialized in this sort of trauma and, after weeks of searching, I realized there was no one in my area that specialized in these experiences.

Now, over 13 years later, I've worked with hundreds of therapy and coaching clients and taught over 100 therapists how to treat religious trauma and cult abuse. I feel so privileged to get to teach survivors and therapists each day and I want to make that support accessible to you.

I've taken all of the knowledge that I've learned and put together a collection of courses for survivors and therapists.

Benefits of a Religious Trauma Support Group

Religious Trauma
January 18, 20232 min read

Experiencing religious trauma can be deeply distressing and feel extremely isolating, leaving individuals feeling confused, hurt, and disconnected from their faith. A religious trauma support group can provide a safe and supportive space for individuals to share their experiences and feelings, and to receive validation and understanding from others who have had similar experiences.

Here are some of the benefits of joining a community for religious trauma recovery:

  1. Finding community and belonging: A support group can provide a sense of belonging and community for individuals who may feel isolated and alone in their struggles. This can be especially important for those who may not have a strong support system outside of their religious community.

  2. Validating and understanding others' experiences: It can be helpful to hear from others who have had similar experiences and to know that you are not alone in your struggles. This can help to reduce feelings of isolation and increase feelings of hope and resilience.

  3. Receiving support and encouragement: A support group can provide a safe space to share your thoughts, feelings, and experiences, and to receive support and encouragement from others. This can be especially helpful for those who may not have a supportive network outside of the group.

  4. Finding healthy coping strategies: Support groups can provide opportunities to learn about and practice healthy coping strategies for dealing with difficult emotions and experiences.

  5. Gaining perspective and understanding: Hearing from others who have gone through similar experiences can help to provide new perspectives and understanding, and can help individuals feel less alone and more connected to others.

Overall, joining a religious trauma support group can be a powerful tool for healing and growth. You can join our thriving community of religious trauma survivors in our monthly membership of A Year of Non-Magical Thinking. We have a private and supportive space for folks to support one another and have deeper conversations about recovery.

For those with religious trauma, it can be incredibly helpful to learn some nervous system regulation techniques. When you are able to regulate, you are able to process your trauma in new and powerful ways. You can learn about nervous system regulation in Regulated: Nervous System Masterclass.
